The ACT Test
The ACT test is used for college admissions, dual enrollment placement and eligibility, and college course placement. The ACT contains four sections: English, Math, Science, and Reading. National test dates occur on Saturdays seven times each year. Students must register online for the national testing dates.
Tennessee requires that all students take the ACT as a graduation requirement.
The state ACT for juniors (provided for free) occurs in March/April during the school day. The registration for this exam is done at the school. Tennessee also provides a free retake for seniors during the fall, also during the school day.
It is recommended that students take the test for the first time during the spring of their junior year because of the curriculum covered in the test. There is an optional ACT writing test, but students only need to take it if it is required by their post-secondary institution.
The SAT Test
The SAT is another type of college admissions test. The test contains reading, writing and language, and math sections — and an optional essay portion. Some colleges do require the essay.
